OVERVIEW AND TRADITIONAL
SOURCES
Angola
possesses rich and diversified energy resources. However,
electricity generation for the country during 2003 (the most
recent available statistics) was 1.9 billion kilowatt hours
(Bkwh), reaching only 15% of Angola's population. Blackouts
occur frequently, for those who do have access to electric
power.
Angola had proven
oil reserves of 5.4 billion barrels and natural gas reserves
of 1.6 trillion cubic feet (TCF) as of January 2006; Angola
has tripled its oil reserves in the last seven years. Angola
is sub-Saharan Africa's second largest oil producer behind
Nigeria. In 2005 Angolan oil consumption averaged 60,000 barrels
per day (bpd).
However, oil consumption is expected to increase as Angola's
infrastructure is refurbished and expanded. Approximately
90% of Angola's government revenue is derived from the sale
of crude oil.
